Leon Keyserling was born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1908. He grew up on the coastal island of St. Helena (SC) and later moved to Beaufort. Keyserling graduated from Beaufort High School at age 16 and attended Columbia University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. After receiving a degree from Harvard Law School, he taught economics at Columbia University and conducted research for the Rockefeller Foundation. Dr. Herbert Keyserling grew up in Beaufort, SC. He graduated from the College of Charleston and Medical College of South Carolina and served as a Navy doctor during World War II. After the war, Keyserling settled in Beaufort with his wife, Harriet, and open a general medical practice. He wrote a book about his experiences in the Navy and Beaufort, called Doctor K. Born in Lithuania, William Keyserling immigrated (1888) to the U.S. and settled in Beaufort, SC. He established himself with the Macdonald, Wilkins Co., a cotton ginnery and wholesale warehouse, and became a leader in the Sea Island cotton industry. Keyserling married New Yorker, Jennie Hyman, in 1907. The couple lived on St. Helena Island and later moved to Beaufort. The Keyserlings had four children.
